Sista Sista pop up series
San Diego’s women-owned businesses are blooming, and maven could not be more excited about it. We love supporting these inspiring entrepreneurs that are enabling change and inclusivity within our community. In support of other female-owned businesses, we had our first ‘Sista Sista’ event to show some love and respect to these local creatives. Dovetail + Darts, Berlin Skin, and Walter + George are true maven girls and we loved getting to talk to them more about their businesses over some cheese and rose a few days ago.
Dovetail + Darts
Kelly Loreto is a designer and woodworker who began her journey with fabric. She exudes style and a passion for the well made that translates into her work; which is inspired by Danish and mid-century modern pieces. Each piece of furniture, woodwork, and painting Kelly designs reflects the time and care she put into working on them, and each is one of a kind. Seeing a badass woman in woodworking, often thought of as a man’s field, makes us love Kelly even more. Kelly mentioned that during her frequent trips to the lumberyard others constantly ask if she needs any help and assumes that she is not familiar with what she is doing. Clearly, she continuously proves them wrong. Maven is thrilled to announce that we will be carrying some of Kelly’s work soon.
Monica Watson founded Berlin Skin in 2016 after her organic skin care recipes became a hit with her friends and family. Through trial and error, she has curated all-natural products that are animal-cruelty free and smell like a dream. Monica is warm and welcoming, and has perfect skin (seriously though it’s like the skin of an angel). She believes in supporting the integrity of her products, which is why she loves having Berlin Skin sold through small, local businesses. Another reason why we love Monica and Berlin Skin so much is her passion for giving back to the community. She does this through an organization called Remember Nhu; a non-profit committed to ending sex slavery. Check out Berlin Skin’s black spruce body oil and be prepared for your life to change forever.
Walter & George
melissa george constantly impresses us with her beautiful, simple designs that are perfect for everyday wear. her passion towards her work is shown through each leather piece she chooses and the intent of making her product long lasting. she is no stranger to maven, you could even call her alumni. we have had some of her hand-stitched pieces since opening up. after a nine month residency in the James Coffee warehouse, she decided to go back to her roots--online retailing. we cannot wait for what she dreams up next and watching her brand grow.(we've had the pleasure of interviewing her in the past and you can check it out here)
